| Description | There are many common challenges that prisoners face upon reentry, and recidivism is a concern for all inmates reentering society. While there are many issues that pose difficulties to reentry across all demographic groups, there is evidence that specific challenges to reentry vary by gender. There is a wealth of criminological research that has found gender differences in the pathways and the continuation of offending, which provides an important framework for understanding gendered challenges of reentry. Historically, most inmate and reentry programming has centered upon the needs of men, and has largely neglected other populations, such as female and transgender individuals. Thus, it is necessary that programs and services in prison and post-release address gender-specific risk factors that increase the likelihood of successful reentry.
