| Description | To the extent that the electrochemical properties are generally indicative of the electronic structure of molecular constituents, redox behavior plays an important role in the solid-state properties of a low-dimensional material. This chapter presents an overview of various electrochemical aspects of molecular solids. It briefly introduces nomenclature and describes some basic concepts of molecular solids. The chapter describes the role redox properties play in the extent of charge transfer, the nominal oxidation states of the molecular components, and the conductivity of one-dimensional solids. However, the mechanistic aspects pertaining to electrocrystallization of low-dimensional molecular solids have received scant attention, at least on a fundamental level and, currently, only some general observations have been made regarding the optimum conditions for electrochemical crystal growth. The electrochemical properties of the molecular species play a significant and somewhat predictive role in the solid-state properties of low-dimensional solids, including conductivity, magnetism, and optical absorbance.
