| Description | Recent reports on the existence of putative cannabinoid receptors have significantly advanced our understanding of signal transduction by these drugs at the cellular $level.^{ 1–4 }$ The question of the possible involvement of second messengers in the actions of cannabinoids, therefore, gains considerable importance. Prime candidates for this role are the various members of the eicosanoid family as well as the classical second messenger, cyclic AMP. The purpose of this review is to discuss the evidence supporting the hypothesis that the metabolites of arachidonic acid are important mediators in many of the actions of both psychoactive and nonpsychoactive cannabinoids.
