| Description | Spanish word-internal coda stops show considerable variation, ranging from full retention to full deletion (e.g., /aseptáɾ/ 'to accept' realized as [asept̪áɾ], [asebt̪áɾ] [aseβt̪áɾ], [aset̪áɾ]). Another possible variant (documented among Latin American dialects) is the velarization of the coda stop (i.e., [asektáɾ]). Previous research indicates that higher type and token frequency of velar stops in this domain account for the direction of change (labial to velar). However, sociolinguistic studies show that dental coda stops seldom velarize (compared to labials). To account for the labial–dental asymmetry, the present study re-operationalizes the repeating unit from a single segment (the coda stop) to the consonant group (a bigram). Findings show that velar and bilabial coda stops share consonant collocations, thus leading to the velarization of bilabials (and not dentals). This study uncovers gradience in the patterns of velarization and accounts for the direction of change as well as the patterns of variation in velarization.
