| Description | This chapter takes as its basic premise that the written word is colonized and obstructs scholars' ability to know the past beyond the confines of the west's worldview and ways of knowing. After briefly treating textual and verbal cultures in this light, the chapter proposes various ways through which visual and material culture allows scholars to gain access to non-western experiences in the past. By focusing on the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Spanish Americas, particularly in New Spain (Mexico) and Peru, this study of visuality and materiality produced and used by Indigenous and mixed-blood individuals allows us to see parallel histories not apparent in the textual record.
