Description	The chapter reviews contemporary scholarship in early childhood that questions commonly held assumptions and dominant perspectives in the early childhood field. It focuses on the powerful discourse of brain research, which has greatly influenced government policy in many countries. The chapter examines some of the theoretical perspectives and three foci of learning in the early years, such as first-language maintenance and loss, literacy, and mathematics. It describes the genesis and organization of this book, and its significance in terms of knowledge, practice, and theory, and its contribution to scholarship in early childhood and early childhood education. The book discusses the changing landscape of early childhood and early childhood education in a diverse, globalized world that is daily becoming more connected by advances in communication technology and characterized by the increasing transnational movement of people.
