| Description | This chapter outlines the evolution of the speech act in securitization theory, particularly the impact of the introduction of modern media platforms and technology: the importance these technologies and platforms have in the development of the speech act beyond a purely verbal act or a linguistic rhetoric. Political actors in Sub-Saharan African (SSA) states working actively with and funded by international conservative and religious organizations mainly from the USA have securitized LGBTI communities in order to prevent LGBTI rights emerging in these states. Securitization theory provides an approach to understanding how LGBTI minority groups can be securitized by SAA states, such as Uganda, posited as an existential threat to the identity of the state. Media channels have had a pivotal role in the social construction of fear within Ugandan society. Technology in SSA, as in the rest of the world, is revolutionizing the distribution of news and the interaction of people through multi-faceted media platforms.
