| Description | This chapter provides an outline of some of the main findings of a body of academic research aimed at explaining the role and significance of the European Union (EU) as an international actor in Internet governance. It outlines a number of key concepts in the literature which have been utilised to provide a better understanding of the role of the EU in the evolving international institutional landscape of the internet. The chapter focuses on some of the main findings of the research conducted to date and suggests a number of areas around which a future research agenda might be formulated. Academic research on the role of the EU as an international actor in internet governance, though growing, should be extended in several key areas. Analysis of the EU's role has focused predominantly on the EU as a leader, mediator, and bridge-builder. Book Name: Routledge Handbook on the European Union and International Institutions |
