| Description | This chapter aims to understand the trope challenging that occurs when Black gay men tell their own stories through podcasting. It utilizes the labels of gay, queer, and same gender loving/attracted interchangeably as a means of acknowledging the various sexual and romantic identities of Black men that align with heterosexuality. The Harlem Renaissance is considered to be one of the most notable Black and queer creative eras to exist. Seemingly one of the most highly endorsed fears in the Black community is that of the down-low Black man – the Black man who presents as heterosexual. The stigma, and negative consequences, centered around Black male same gender sexual interaction can even be observed in pop culture media. The Black community has attempted to separate themselves from the negative sexual scripts by repressing Black sexual exploration and adhering to teachings of acceptable and unacceptable sexual performance.
