| Description | The circles or arcs of prompted or suppressed plant growth or of the fruiting bodies of soil-inhabiting fungi which often occur in floors of woodlands, agricultural or grassland in most parts of the world are generally called “fairy rings” (Fig. 18.1A). The term “fairy rings” has its origin in the myths and superstitions associated with their occurrence in the Middle Ages. The circles were thought by some to be the dancing sites of fairies. The stimulated grass growth which may be symptomatic of the activities of some fairy ring fungi results from the breakdown of organic nitrogen compounds as fungus mycelium or other organic material is decomposed and the nitrogen made available is then taken up by the green plants (Couch 1995, Evershed 1884, Shantz and Piemeisel 1917, Smith 1959). While fairy rings have been widely reported (Shantz and Piemeisel 1917), high resolution aerial imagery was made available in the last decade (Fig. 18.1B and C).
