| Description | After introducing injection molding and mold design for plastic components, a very similar process and mechanism to make metal injection parts is discussed. Die casting is a manufacturing process for producing precisely dimensioned simple or complex-shaped parts from non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, magnesium, zinc, copper, etc. [1]. In this process, molten metal is injected into the die cavity under high pressure, and the die-casting is ejected from the die halves after it has solidified. In this chapter, the term die-casting is used to describe the part produced, while die casting refers to the process. Focus will be given to gating, runner, filling, die base design, etc. and semi-automated die design methodology that can lead to the commercialization on CAD-based die design systems. The parting, ejection, and cooling designs are basically quite similar to the plastic injection mold design as described in the previous chapters.
