| Description | This chapter considers the reasons why it may be impossible to predict the formation of relationships. It looks at the impact of serendipity or chance factors and the ways in which stress complicates relationship formation. It also examines the ways in which real life differs from dating in the lab and critiques the extent to which much attraction research is based on heteronormative standards. Instead, I consider how a queer paradigm could enhance attraction research. This chapter also looks at the impact of individual differences on relationship formation, with foci on shyness, cultural scripts, and attachment anxiety. Finally, I show how self-compassion can help us all become better daters. Book Name: Attraction Explained |
