| Description | Laminaran was isolated from Eisenia bicyclis. On the basis of the methylation, periodate oxidation, NMR spectroscopy by$ ^{1}$H and$ ^{13}$C nuclei, this glucan was shown to have a branched structure composed of (l → 3)- and (l → 6)-Iinked β-d-glucopyranose residues in the ratio 3: 2. The glucan was especially characterized by comparison of its$ ^{13}$C and$ ^{1}$H. NMR spectra with those of related compounds. The NMR investigation of the polyol polysaccharide, obtained by reduction after periodate oxidation of laminaran, was very useful for elucidation of the composition, structure and major sequence of the native glucan. |
