| Description | In the circulatory system, the pulse wave travels along with the energy exchanged between the owing blood and the elastic vessel walls. In the aorta, the pressure increases with left ventricular ejection, and blood ows through it, as it dilates and relaxes (or contracts). In situations associated with arterial stiffening (i.e., arteriosclerosis), the speed of the pulse wave increases [1], because the energy of the blood pressure pulse cannot be stored in a stiffer arterial wall. Hence, the state of the vessel can be described by the pulse wave velocity (PWV) [2], and PWV can be utilized as an index of arterial distensibility [3].
