| Description | Long term Earth observation data archiving is a serious issue that has not been properly grasped by funding organisations which have relatively short term responsibilities. This chapter examines the issues of long term archiving, including length of data preservation, data archive responsibility, data access and level of processing. The data archiving situation is compared between the US and Europe, and an argument is presented to set data archiving policy in the context of future generations who will want and need access to (by then) old Earth observation data.
