| Description | Metal-based nanoparticles (MNPs) frequently demonstrate physical and chemical properties different from the same bulky materials, and therefore it is important to recognize their potential nano-specific toxicity, which could adversely affect plant growth and development, and monitor the accumulation of toxic metals exceeding the permitted levels in the food chain that may endanger human and animal health. On the other hand, it is desirable to maximize the beneficial effects of MNP on plants by using them in nanopriming or as fertilizers. This chapter focuses on the uptake, transport, and accumulation of MNPs in vascular plants and on their beneficial and adverse effects on the germination, growth, and photosynthetic processes in plants, including relevant mechanisms of action. Genotoxic effects of MNPs on vascular plants are also discussed. Attention is also given to the favorable effects of MNPs on alleviating abiotic stresses in vascular plants, which is of great importance nowadays under changing climatic conditions. An improvement in the synthesis of valuable secondary metabolites in crops or in tissue cultures of vascular plants is also outlined. Extracellular synthesis of MNPs using plant extracts and formation of MNPs inside living plants and methods used for monitoring of the formation and characterization of MNPs are briefly presented as well.
