| Description | Sampling, or chopping of an analog signal requires a switch to take a sample, and a capacitor to hold the signal's instantaneous value for processing. This analog switch application forms the basis for many of the most common analog switch and MUX applications. A/D converters and data acquisition systems often utilize analog switches to chop a signal into discrete samples, and a hold capacitor to keep the value constant while the converter is completing its conversion routine. This basic function is called a sample and hold. D/A converters and data distribution systems require sample and holds to “take a snapshot” of the output of the converter to remove conversion glitches from the signal, preserving the accuracy of the output value.
