| Description | Cracking from repeated loading is one of the most critical forms of asphalt pavement deterioration. Because this cracking occurs on a microscopic level, it is often difficult to image until after failure or complete cracking of the asphalt sample. Recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) is one of the more common waste materials in the world, and their use to replace virgin asphalt materials could improve its management. This study looks at the crack development of semi-dense asphalt (SDA) pavement under repeated MMLS3 wheel loading through digital image correlation (DIC). Two mixtures were tested: a conventional SDA mixture and an SDA mixture with the filler replacement by RCA filler. The process to attain the images and the analysis of the results are described. The RCA filler did not have a significant effect on the cracking behavior of the SDA mixture, indicating it is a suitable filler replacement in asphalt mixtures.
