| Description | Alcohol in various forms has been made, traded, sold and used by humans for millennia. Beer and wine were noted to be safe alternatives to the relatively unsafe sources of available polluted water found in most cities during the middle ages and was and still is produced by monks for personal use and trade. Physicians encouraged the consumption of these beverages by both adults and children. Alcohol was also used as an early anesthetic; its stupefying effects were relied on for hundreds of years until better anesthetic alternatives were developed in the mid-nineteenth century. Along the same timeframe, it can be assumed that people began to self-treat with various forms of alcohol for chronic pain, psychological disorders, depression, and other maladies, which continues to date, with no end in sight. Alcohol-related surgical research, which really began during the last century, relates mainly to the identification of those suffering from alcohol abuse, as well as those with withdrawal potential, the treatment of withdrawal, and diminishing preventable death from trauma as related to alcohol use and abuse.
