| Description | Environmentally benign batteries are essential for the future of portable electronics and grid-scale applications. Magnesium-ion batteries are a promising battery technology because magnesium metal anodes provide a number of advantages, such as high volumetric capacity, nontoxicity, nondendric nature, and cost effectiveness, making magnesium batteries a safer option for next-generation batteries. Incorporating metals such as Sn and Bi increases the anodic stability of the material. Research on magnesium insertion/deinsertion and improving the electrochemical performance of magnesium-ion batteries is ongoing. For the past few decades, researchers have focused mainly on stable and efficient electrolytes that beat the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion batteries. Passive layer formation and incompatibility of organic electrolytes toward the magnesium metals are major challenges faced by these electrolytes. In this scenario, polymer electrolytes are elucidating the imperfection caused by other electrolytes. Addition of fillers, plasticizers, ionic liquids, etc., increases the efficiency of the batteries, and detailed description of the type of electrolytes and their electrochemical performance is described in this chapter.
