| Description | In this chapter, we demonstrate how$ ^{13}$C-NMR, currently the method of choice, can be used to characterize the microstructures of polymers. We show that the use of empirical substituent effects (α-, β-, and γ-) developed from the spectra of small molecule models with known structures can be utilized to assign$ ^{13}$C-NMR resonances to the microstructures that produce them. In addition, substituents that are separated by three bonds from and are γ to a$ ^{13}$C atom shield its nucleus from the static applied magnetic field only when they are arranged proximally in a gauche conformation. We denote this as the γ-gauche nuclear shielding effect. Because we have just attempted to demonstrate that polymer conformations are dictated by their microstructures, we can connect and characterize their microstructures and their$ ^{13}$C-NMR spectra in the following manner.
