| Description | An access list represents a sequential collection of permit and deny conditions that are applied to certain field values in packets that attempt to flow through a router interface. Once an access list is configured, it is applied to one or more router interfaces, resulting in the implementation of a security policy. As packets attempt to flow through a router's interface, the device compares data in one or more fields in the packet to the statements in the access list associated with the interface. Data in selected fields in the packet are compared against each statement in the access list in the order in which the statements were entered to form the list. The first match between the contents or conditions of a statement in the access list and one or more data elements in specific fields in each packet determines whether or not the router permits the packet to flow through the interface or sends the packet to the great bit bucket in the sky via a filtering operation.
