Description	Complex and large projects fail at an unacceptably high rate. There are many reasons, but one of them is the improper management of people who are involved in projects. Studies have shown that projects with strong project stakeholder management are more likely to be successful. This chapter discusses four important processes including identifying stakeholders, planning stakeholder engagement, managing stakeholder engagement, and monitoring stakeholder engagement. Stakeholder is a relatively new performance domain for project management even though the management study of stakeholder became popular with Freeman's (1984) book titled Strategic Management: A Stakeholder Approach. This was a pioneering work on the subject of stakeholders, and when it became widely accepted in management, an emerging field called stakeholder theory was formed. In project management, stakeholder was traditionally discussed in conjunction with communication. But clearly, stakeholder is much more than communication. Today, as projects have grown in complexity, stakeholder management provides additional lens through which project professionals can understand project scope, analyze project environment, and manage and shape stakeholder expectations. 114This chapter addresses these three important questions pertaining to stakeholder management: Why is managing stakeholders important?
