| Description | This chapter describes and discusses some of the main issues for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) diffusion in Greece through the key notion of the Greek GIS community. It describes the concepts of diffusion of innovations and technological communities. The chapter reviews the methods which were employed to investigate these key concepts. It presents some of the analytical findings in relation to the key concepts and the wider objectives of this research. The chapter provides an evaluation of the findings and a commentary on the value and the potential of the underlying theoretical concepts. The concept of technological community is another social entity which has not been used so far as a unit of analysis for GIS diffusion. In the early 1990s, most of the GIS applications in Greece had been undertaken by ministry agencies, utilities, and municipalities. The emerging nature of a GIS community in Greece will be mainly dominated by the technological framework of surveying engineers. Book Name: Geographic Information Research |
