| Description | Environmentally sustainable solutions can only be found by taking a life cycle approach. The life cycle of a product consists of all the stages from raw material extraction to its disposal. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is an assessment tool for a product (in LCA the concept product refers not only to material products but also to services), which provides us a structured way to decide which alternative is more environmentally friendly. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) defines LCA as “the compilation and evaluation of the inputs, outputs and the potential environmental impacts of a product system throughout its life cycle” (ISO, 2006a). Figure 4.1 presents the possible life cycle stages that can be considered in an LCA and the typical inputs/outputs measured. This holistic view makes LCA unique in the sustainability toolbox. LCA is mainly focused on the environmental impacts although it can also include both social and economic impacts for a sustainability assessment. Figure 4.1 Life cycle stages in an LCA.
