| Description | Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and other forms of advanced vehicle technology have the potential to dramatically improve public safety. While advances in sensor technologies, software, data algorithms, and engineering solutions continue at a rapid pace, human evolution remains little changed. Over a century of examination demonstrates that humans have limited attentional capacity, have difficulty maintaining focused attention for a sustained time, and are easily distracted. Therefore, it is imperative that attention management solutions are developed to facilitate the safe and effective implementation of autonomous capabilities for all road users. Attention management strategies for partial and highly autonomous driving are reviewed. Focus is placed on what is currently known and what needs further investigation.
