| Description | The management of change in the school is an area where the lessons accumulated from years of research into actual innovations can provide some real guidance for heads seeking to implement change. The approach to managing change is known as the 'Research, Development and Diffusion' approach and was widely used in this country and elsewhere during the 1960s and 1970s. If one looks at the 'state of the art' knowledge about how to manage change in schools it is intriguing to see how many of the recommended features were present in that pilot scheme in the late 1960s. Loucks-Horsley and Hergert, who have both been involved in facilitating change in American schools, have produced a seven-step action guide to managing change for school improvement. The head's role in the management of change is crucial. Curriculum changes take longer to implement but in this area new heads were likely to initiate reviews of the curriculum at an early stage.
