| Description | In this chapter I want to outline some developments in the production and portrayal of Gibraltar; notably the history of the British presence and its relation to the development of the complex Gibraltarian civil population.$ ^{1}$ These may seem esoteric themes, but in the current European situation the construction of identities and their subsequent mobilization is an increasing focus of interest for anthropologists and other scholars. I, however, have made no rigid appeal to theoretical anthropological debate regarding ethnicity,$ ^{2}$ because much of what will be discussed is closely related to these historical developments, and it seems to me that now classic anthropological arguments which emphasize boundaries need to be given far greater historical scope. Therefore, I prefer for the present to simply develop some themes which I regard as necessary preliminaries to an understanding of Gibraltar's complex presence. Hopefully, the paper will also offer insight into what it might mean to become European in the Gibraltar context or, more pointedly, what it might be necessary to leave behind.
