| Description | Mexico is one of the most diverse countries in the world (Figure 8.1), of the more than 190 nations, regarding its flora and vertebrate fauna (Figures 8.2 and 8.3). It is part of a select group of 17 countries recognized as megadiverse—these countries are home to 60–70% of the planet's known biological diversity (Mittermier and Goettsch-Mittermier, 1992). Moreover, Mexico hosts numerous different landscapes across its territory where biological diversity is intrinsically related to cultural diversity. Figure 8.1 Map of Mexico and its exclusive economic zone showing the seas that surround the country, the main Sierras and the Neovolcanic Belt with two of its highest volcanoes (indicated with a black triangle, from left to right: Popocatépetl, 5,426 m; Citlaltépetl or Pico de Orizaba 5,636 m). Figure 8.2 The five countries with the greatest diversity of vascular plants (Reprinted from Sarukhán et al., 2017). Note: For comparative purposes, the total number of recorded species follow the highest estimates from the most recent assessments.
