| Description | The effects of providing abundant inorganic nitrogen (N) to white clover cultivars 'Grasslands Huia' and Menna were evaluated under controlled nutrient solution conditions. Similar growth rates were found in both cultivars when provided with abundant inorganic N. Although both cultivars took up similar amounts of ammonium N, Menna took up 12-15% more nitrate N. This was associated with a greater leaf nitrate reductase activity and a greater ratio of stolon to root N concentration. Nodule formation in the absence of N, and nodule suppression in the presence of nitrate N were similar between cultivars. However, N fixation in the absence ofN, was greater in Huia than Menna, with the ratio of N uptake to fixation in the presence of nitrate N the reverse. The ability of Menna to compete in high N environments may result from its ability to assimilate more nitrate N, thereby reducing the amount of inorganic N a vailable for associated grass growth. |
