| Description | A one-dimensional multiphase numerical model is developed to simulate the settlement involving liquid and gas flows in a compressible municipal solid waste landfill. It is assumed that the waste decomposition generates a mixture of gas comprised of methane and carbon dioxide and the generation rate follows an exponentially decaying function of time. Galerkin finite element method is employed to discretize the governing equations. Then, the resulting equations are solved by the Gaussian elimination technique. The developed model can be useful to predict the transient and ultimate settlements with waste decomposition and gas generation in municipal solid waste landfills. Book Name: Poromechanics II |
