| Description | HIGHLIGHTS The ability of coastal, sea-level controlled wetlands to sequester carbon is inextricably linked to their respective hydrogeomorphology and ability to maintain themselves in the face of changing sea level. Several geological and archeological approaches are used to observe sea level change in the Holocene; including assessments of basal peats, micro-atolls, paleo-marshes, historical documentation, and for the most recent period tide gauges and satellite altimetry. Each has its own benefits and limitations with modeling providing interpretation and extrapolation. 122Rates of sea level change vary across time and space with large deviations from global mean sea level change where geographical differences can have opposing trends. The challenge is to understand and quantify how carbon sequestration responds to relative sea level rise (SLR) under the many environmental conditions that promote, maintain, or degrade coastal wetlands. Withstanding high rates of relative SLR by salt marshes and mangroves depends on access to sediment as well as organic matter production for vertical growth. Horizontal expansion is promoted by low-slope, juxtaposed land for transgression. Less is known about the response of seagrass ecosystems, but the importance of adequate light penetration is evident.
