| Description | Evolutions of the void ratio e are calculated for dry granular bodies under plane strain conditions with different uniform boundary stresses or displacements. Initial states are prescribed with homogeneous or linear stress fields with a mean void ratio below the critical void ratio e c . Spatial fluctuations of the void ratio with exponential distribution are attributed to the elements. The hypoplastic constitutive relation models dilatancy and stress ratio peak for continued shearing with e < e c . Δe and shear strains increase preferably in narrow strips in two directions with respect to principal stress axes. The positive feedback leads to one or two shear bands in slender biaxial bodies, as observed in experiments. Biaxial compression of flat bodies leads to a zig-zag pattern of shear zones. The same pattern evolves in a granular layer under gravity by extension of the base, together with a wavy surface, again as observed. With an included fine-grained layer and dislocation of the base, realistic tectonic faults are obtained. Some extensions are indicated: other boundary conditions not restricted to plane strain, interface elements for narrow shear zones, mesh-independence.
