| Description | Pollution of soil, water, and air due to various organic and inorganic pollutants is one of the most significant environmental problems all over the world, posing risks to humans, animals, microorganisms, and plants. Current physico-chemical technologies for cleaning contaminated environments are usually expensive, labor intensive, and soil disturbing. Phytoremediation is a promising, sustainable, inexpensive green technology for the treatment and/or removal of contaminants from the environment or to render them harmless using plants. However, the major constraints of this technology are that even plants that are grown in presence of toxic contaminants often remain relatively small, due to the phytotoxicity of the pollutants. In addition, it is time consuming, with slow degradation, limited uptake, and evapotranspiration of volatile contaminants into the environment. In recent years, exploiting the potential of microbes in phytoremediation for the removal and/or degradation or detoxification of organic and inorganic pollutants from contaminated environments has shown great promise because of their plant growth–promoting and strong pollutant-degrading and detoxifying efficiency. The present chapter aims to provide a comprehensive review of the following areas of microbe-assisted phytoremediation of environmental pollutants: (i) environmental pollution and toxicity profile of various organic and inorganic pollutants, (ii) fundamental and applied aspects of conventional and novel physico-chemical and bioremediation approaches for environmental management and their merits and demerits, and (iii) the role of microbes in enhancing phytoremediation of environmental pollutants.
