| Description | In this textbook, the finite element method (FEM) is used as a tool to solve practical problems. For the most part, commercial packages, mainly $ANSYS^{®}$, are used in the examples. Computer programming is limited to implementing material models and post-processing algorithms. When commercial codes lack needed features, other codes are used, which are provided in [5]. A basic understanding of the finite element method is necessary for effective use of any finite element software. Therefore, this chapter contains a brief introduction intended for those readers who have not had a formal course or prior knowledge about the finite element method. Furthermore, an introduction to ANSYS Mechanical APDL is presented to familiarize the reader with the typical procedures used for finite element modeling using commercial software.
