| Description | 245This chapter describes the results of FRIEND21 project, funded by the Japanese government. FRIEND21 introduced the notion of adaptive change in user interfaces, and developed a set of frameworks facilitating the development of user interfaces adaptive to change through the dynamic combination of system functions and their presentation (metaphors). The FRIEND21 approach is based on: (i) the notion of Metaware, as the cognitive principle underlying the systematic description and control of adaptive change; and (ii) the Agency Model, as a mechanism for embodying the Metaware principle. The chapter also discusses the relevance of the FRIEND21 project results to the concept of User Interfaces for All. Book Name: User Interfaces for All |
