| Description | In the 1950s, large quantities of Soviet literature were translated and distributed in China, with the aim of shaping popular perception about socialist ideology. In the public venues (newspapers, magazines, etc.), Chinese readers enthusiastically discussed the topics of revolution, socialist construction, and the cause of Communism, which largely met official expectations. Yet privately, as this chapter shows, people were more drawn to themes of love, intimacy, personal freedom, and humanism in Soviet novels, which significantly departed from the party line. In the 1950s, large quantities of Soviet literature were translated and distributed in China, with the aim of shaping popular perception about socialist ideology. By examining the ways that Soviet literature interacted with Chinese readership in the 1950s, this chapter explains the extraordinary potency of Soviet literature in China, while at the same time illuminating the relationship between Chinese state and society. The chapter addresses what values did the Chinese state intend to promote through Soviet literature and how did readers respond. It explores what readers enjoyed about Soviet literature and how was that different from the officially promoted values. The chapter focuses on some of the most celebrated Soviet works and examines the social dynamics they brought about in Chinese society. In comparison with Chinese college students, Soviet college students had a bigger stage on which to develop their personalities and talents.
