| Description | Accelerated cooling refers to cooling at a higher rate, achieved through controlled water spray instead of conventional air cooling, in the run-out table of a hot-rolling mill. It enables efficient production of flat and long products in a shorter run-out table with desired microstructure and mechanical properties through higher cooling rate and lower coiling temperature. In this entry, microstructure development and final properties achieved during hot-rolling operation have been described through continuous cooling curve and quenchants, relevant phase transformations, and strengthening mechanisms. Specific examples of a few modern accelerated cooling technologies are detailed. Book Name: Encyclopedia of Iron, Steel, and Their Alloys |
