| Description | There are several valid theories of failure mechanics for ductile materials such as metals and plastics. However, these theories have not been as thoroughly investigated for polycrystalline substances such as rocks. For this reason the term criterion of failure is used rather than failure mechanics, because rapture of a polycrystalline rock material is little known, and it is impossible to develop a theory which will explain and fit all rock types in all states of stress, under various confinement conditions and time.
