| Description | The use of piezoelectric actuators for space or car applications is limited by the high voltage required (over a thousand volts) and the low displacement achieved (about ten micrometers). A new series of amplified piezoelectric actuators called APA overcomes these two drawbacks. The multilayer technique employed reduces the voltage requirements to less than two hundred volts, and the displacement achievable is about ten times higher with this amplified piezoelectric actuator than with a classical direct piezoelectric actuator. A first promising field of application of the amplified piezoelectric actuator is the vibration damping. This technique is based on the use of active material and a passive electrical network (which does not require power supply). The active material converts its mechanical energy into electrical energy then dissipated through a resistive shunt. The electrical network aims to increase this joule's heat effect. The most basic application is the tuned mass damper. Different electrical circuits (inductance, negative capacitance,…) are compared. A second class of application is the semi-active isolation of vibration. For example, we demonstrate in this paper that such a semi-active system can be added to a passive elastic suspension in order to increase its performances. The electrical network provides therefore a negative capacitance, which compensates the dielectric and the motional capacitances of the amplified piezoelectric actuator. The low stiffness obtained over a wide range of frequencies allows the amplified piezoelectric actuator to reduce the transmitted vibration. Book Name: Active Control in Mechanical Engineering |
