| Description | Solid waste management is a major global challenge that humanity is facing since the last few decades. The dumping of unsegregated municipal wastes in and around us is creating an unhygienic environment, leading to an increase in the size and numbers of landfills. A major portion i.e., more than 60% of the municipal solid wastes in developing countries are organic fraction (Chakhtoura et al. 2014), which constitutes a mixture of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and fibers (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin). It is estimated that 143,449 metric tons per day of urban municipal solid waste is generated, as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), 2014–15. With an increase in urban growth rate of 3.0%–3.5% per year, the per capita waste generation is also increasing at a rate of 1.3% every year (CPHEEO 2016). However, most of the solid wastes are not properly collected by the authorities in towns and cities. Moreover, uncontrolled disposal and burning up of these wastes is the common practice observed in many areas leading to a significant health risk for the large masses along with rapid degradation of the environment (Varma et al. 2013). At present, the biological management of OFMSW is mainly carried out by either composting or anaerobic digestion. Composting is a widely familiar fundamental process of treatment of biodegradable waste. On the other hand, anaerobic digestion has some advantages over composting; however, certain operational hindrances exist, as methanogenic bacteria are sensitive to many toxic substances present in waste and low energy conversion efficiency compared to other fermentation products.
