| Description | Biotic and abiotic stresses are major restrictive factors for plant growth and harvest. Microorganisms interacting with plants exhibit enormous potential to mitigate these stresses in the host plants. However, the associations between plants and microbes are highly diverse and can be broadly categorized as favorable, neutral or harmful. Certain beneficial plant–microbe interactions can serve as natural and sustainable alternatives to fertilizers and pesticides for combating such stresses. For example, some members of the bacterial genera Bacillus, Trichoderma, and Fusarium prevent plant diseases by subduing plant pathogens and, thereby, serving as biocontrol agents. Application of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and mycorrhizal fungi enhance plant growth under various stress conditions. Both fungal and bacterial endophytes are found to be active stress relievers of the host plant. Metal-resistant siderophore-producing bacteria help the plant to thrive under heavy metal stress by alleviating the metal toxicity. This chapter provides an overview of significant plant–microbe interactions in terms of protection against biotic and abiotic stresses, and also presents relevant future research direction with the aim of sustainable agriculture.
