Description	Change in the organizational structure of an industrial firm has long been recognized as both an important determinant and a consequence of technological change. This chapter discusses the key organizational characteristics of the industrial firm and the nature of organizational change that either inhibits or may generate progress toward sustainable development. It explores the scope of change that can be expected from existing firms versus new market entrants by focusing on environmentally oriented technological changes and consumer satisfaction. The chapter discusses the policy implications related to encouraging firms to innovate for sustainable development and looks at the pressures that stimulate environmentally responsible actions by firms. It deals with the pressures on, and responses of, the business firm to growing concerns about unsustainable forms of industrialization. The chapter considers how firms have responded to social demands for more environmentally sound activities.
