| Description | Practitioners and researchers studying and designing healthcare delivery in pediatric settings need to account for patient ergonomics unique to pediatrics. Children are not small adults; there are several differences in who is involved in healthcare delivery and the work associated with delivering health care between adult and pediatric patients. Pediatric health care brings unique attributes and considerations for human factors/ergonomics (HF/E). Specifically, there is substantial involvement of family members and nonprofessional caregivers to accomplish patient work required to deliver quality care to pediatric patients. In addition, the nature of patient work changes over time as children grow and develop. As such, there are key factors to be considered when designing an HF/E intervention in the pediatric setting. In this chapter, we describe unique characteristics of pediatric health care and present case studies to illustrate several HF/E applications in pediatrics, pediatric-specific challenges, and opportunities for patient ergonomics considerations to develop maximally effective interventions to address patient safety challenges and self-management of care.
