| Description | For lightning protection purposes, it is essential to estimate the probability that lightning strikes different parts of a structure because most damage is normally caused close to the striking point (IEC-TC81, 1986). A method widely used for engineering applications is based on the concept of the attractive distance—the lightning sphere model, which was originally launched by Gilman and Whitehead (1973) as the electrogeometrical model, where the lightning protection criteria are related to the peak lightning current and the striking distance (Figure 1). However, it is recognized that so-called shielding failure occurs from time to time (Chapter 22, Golde, 1977; Dellera and Garbagnati, 1984). Improved models of lightning return stroke (Uman and Krider, 1982) and of lightning interception (Dellera and Garbagnati, 1981) have been proposed, the last considers the propagation of downward and upward leaders. In this report, two mechanisms are suggested which may influence the frequency of lightning strikes to different parts of the air termination of a lightning protection system and which could be included in an improved model of lightning interception. Figure 1 Striking distance limits versus return stroke peak current for objects attached to earth determined by different lightning interception models (Golde, 1977) (curve 1 and curve 2) and the few really observed values (Uman and Krider, 1982; Uman, 1969) mark 3.
