| Description | One of the more popular axioms in the field of networking is the fact that end-user applications tend to grow and eventually consume all available bandwidth. Although this may be a slight exaggeration, network managers and local area network (LAN) administrators are constantly challenged with the task of improving network performance. In a quest to improve network performance, network managers and LAN administrators turned to a variety of techniques. Such techniques typically include segmenting networks, adding Layer 2 and the more recently developed Layer 3 switches, and, on occasion, migrating to a new network architecture that supports a higher data transfer capacity. Although each of the previously mentioned methods represents an effective solution to the problem of network bottlenecks, they are relatively expensive solutions. In addition, implementing one or more of the previously referenced network techniques can be time-consuming and can require the modification of an existing infrastructure, which places portions of the current infrastructure in an inoperative condition for a period of time.
