| Description | This chapter shows why similarity of attitudes - or attitudinal similarity - is important to relationship formation using the 'phantom stranger' paradigm. It looks at the difference between perceived and actual similarity and considers why perceived similarity may be important, focusing in particular on theories of effectance and information processing. This chapter also considers the importance of similarity on dimensions beyond attitudes, including similarity of physical appearance and demographics. In particular, I highlight a form of sexual racism in online dating services. This chapter looks at the ways in which similarity of personality affects relationship formation and critiques the idea of complementarity as being pseudoscientific. It also examines the usefulness of matching algorithms in online dating services and, finally, considers whether there may be situations when opposites do in fact attract.
