| Description | The transitional ecosystems in the form of wetlands have high productivity supporting diverse habitats and biological diversity and are recognized for their different goods and services to the ecosystems. Nearly half of worldwide wetlands have been reported disoriented or going to be worsening because of natural and manmade interventions. Degradation of wetlands from the Indian perspective is due to harmful socio-environmental activities leading to poor water conditions. It is, therefore, crucial to prioritize the regeneration of depleted wetlands, together with the protection and maintenance of current wetlands, as they are amongst the most important and vulnerable elements of the water bodies. The current research evidence suggests that wetland conservation management practices must be premised on conventional information and technology uses that will ultimately assist in cost-effectively and sustainably promoting biological diversity and maintaining critical functions for the ecosystems. This study looks at the wetland opportunities in the Birbhum district (West Bengal) in India on the basis of geographic limits, the biodiversity benefits it provides, and the various stresses they sometimes encounter. This chapter also discusses efforts to conserve these wetlands, 686explains the systemic gap, and suggests areas of emphasis where immediate intervention is required to implement effective management strategies and encourage the efficient use of wetland assets for the socio-economic growth of these productive ecosystems.
