| Description | This chapter seeks to review the efforts of scholars who have attempted to estimate the prevalence and/or incidence of forced sexual intercourse in the broader perspective that has emerged. It argues that a great deal of variance exists among the findings reported by various scholars. Forced sexual intercourse is increasingly becoming of interest to activists and researchers. Forced sexual intercourse is, at best, a concept lacking clear definition, conceptual boundaries, and identified dimensions. Estimations of the incidence and prevalence of the phenomena have varied greatly from research project to research project. The definition of behavior which includes the specific use of force in sexual interaction as rape can be clouded by the introduction of collateral factors. The definition, nature, and frequency of occurrence of sexually offensive behaviors have been affected by changing social definitions of courtship and dating.
