| Description | Mentoring and 'peer' mentoring are increasingly becoming features of rehabilitative interventions aimed at reducing reoffending. This chapter offers a critical introduction to these practices, outlining the potential for mentoring to assist people in leaving crime behind and to mediate some of the excluding practices of the criminal justice system. It explores how mentors who draw upon lived experiences can potentially bond with, relate to, and inspire their mentees in a personalized way. They can often also offer high levels of support and fill gaps in existing services. Despite this potential, however, there are also concerns about the practices, given the lack of a developed mentoring theory, the potential for relationships to encounter problems, the tensions posed by a predominantly punitive criminal justice system, and the potential for excessive personal demands upon mentors. These possibilities and concerns require the attention of practitioners and academics in order to harness the potentials of mentoring for this field.
